Residency Outcome: One Drop at a Time

One Drop at a Time is an immersive and participatory installation that integrates data collection, education and technology with art. Participants have the opportunity to better understand their local climate as well as share personal stories, beliefs, and perceptions about climate change. Participants are immersed in a 360-degree surround sound and video loop that includes footage shot during Mark Lee Koven’s residency in South Florida, as well as 3D-printed objects and interactive activities, such as water desalination and purification, taking place inside of and around a mobile planetarium dome.

During his residency in Miami on board of the Impossible Dream, ARTSail’s main vessel partner, and several consecutive trips to the region, Utah-based artist and researcher Mark Lee Koven gathered footage of underwater marine and coastal environments such as damaged and bleached coral reefs, seaweed beds and mangroves habitats. The footage was edited to create the film screened inside the dome. Koven also collected interviews with South Florida-based residents, sharing stories and anecdotes about their own experiences of how climate change has affected the region. Participants will also be asked to fill out surveys, initiated by the Yale Program on Climate Communication that are meant to measure the audience’s beliefs and perceptions in relation to the climate crisis and our changing environment.
